Descending a 1.3 km course with an 85 meter elevation drop and over 100 steep, tight, rough stairs through natural urban obstacles, these riders got two chances to lay down a top race run on this two minute course. Corey Hatch from Turner Dark Horse Racing took his Turner DHRto Ensenada for his first Urban race and brought home a commendable 4th place finish. Here is a little bit of what Corey shared with us:
[Q] Did you prepare for this race any differently? [A ] I prepared for this race the same as usual, I just went into it wanting to have a lot of fun since it was nothing like anything I’ve ever done.
[Q] How many times did you get to practice the course? [A ] There were only a few hours of practice before the race, so I did maybe about 5 runs before the race.
[Q] Any treacherous moments? Sketchy parts of the course? Pedestrian entanglements? [A ] Nothing too treacherous! The whole track was littered with sketchy spots but that made it a lot of fun. Luckily I didn’t hit any pedestrians as that was one of the things I was worried about.
[Q] Any more urban adventures in your future? [A ] Hope so!!! I had a lot of fun going down toMexicohanging out with everyone! Made some new friends and had an awesome time. The urban race was definitely a good experience and look forward to doing more of them!
[Q] Any experiences outside of the race that you would like to mention? [A ] Nothing special happened. We made it there and back safely. We had a group of ten or so and we met up with some locals when we got there. We rode some of the downhill trails that they have inEnsenadaand they were mint! I had a great trip. Read more

[Q] Tell us a bit about the highlights of the weekend leading up to the race. [A] The highlights of the week were definitely just being in Whistler for Crankworx. It is definitely my favorite event of the year because its a very calm atmosphere and you just get to ride with everyone and have a good time. It also helps that the Canadian Open is my favorite track to ride! I just wish Mike could have been riding instead of watching from the sidelines.
[Q] Describe your race run for us and how you felt at the bottom of the hill. [A] My race run was great. It was everything I was hoping it to be. After every race run you can always pick out things you could have done better and hit faster, so other than a few slow spots I am happy with how it went. Except for the fact I came into the finish line way too fast and couldn’t stop so I had to lay it over!! Hahaha oh well.
[Q] If you could change one thing about how the weekend went what would it be? [A] If I could change one thing with how the weekend went, it would be Mike not being able to ride. He is one of my best friends and the fact that he wasn’t there practicing with me, made it feel a lot different and weird. He helps me out with a lot and I know that is also his favorite race. So I wish him and the other teammates were there riding!
[Q] After such a standout result how does this effect you going into the rest of the season? [A] I think that this puts me in a good mind state for the off season. It was the last race (big race) of the year for me, and finishing just a couple seconds off the pace of the top world cup riders, on a gnarly track, makes me happy. I am going to train hard this off season and come into next year fitter, and faster!
Yeah Corey…We were stoked for you too! It was awesome to watch the video of you crash-landing the finish line.

Due to an overwhelming response, the venue Donner Ski Ranch has chosen to postpone the event to be better prepared for the event.
After coming off a stellar performance in Port Angeles, Mike Daniels returns to Southern California and shreds to take a spot on the podium next to Aaron Gwin.[Q] How did you prepare for the event, anything different from the normal routine? Special training techniques, diet changes, mental prep? [A] I think it is important to keep everything the same, eating healthy and training hard so that I know I’m prepared going into the race.
[Q] Tell us a bit about the highlights of the weekend leading up to the race. [A] It just felt really good gettin’ loose at dusty at Fontana.
[Q] Describe your race run for us and how you felt at the bottom of the hill. [A] Since it was a two run format, I had two solid race runs, pedaling hard which definitely left me tired at the bottom of the hill because of all the sprinting at Fontana.
[Q] If you could change one thing about how the weekend went what would it be? [A] Maybe some rain… but besides that I’m pretty happy how it went.
[Q] After such a standout result how does this effect you going into the rest of the season? [A] After racing at both Port Angeles and Fontana I’m pretty excited for the rest of the season knowing that I can adapt to such different tracks and still do well.

Turner Bicycles lays claim to offering the world’s first production downhill bike, so it’s no surprise David Turner continues to push the limits of production race bikes. After all, the downhill market has evolved substantially since 1996 when Turner’s Afterburner delivered a whopping 3.6” of rear wheel travel.

[Q] How did you prepare for the event, anything different from the normal routine? Special training techniques, diet changes, mental prep?
[A] I took pretty much the same approach as I usually do for racing. A little more cardio in my training and I actually just got a trainer a week before, so now I’m starting to make changes to my training. We’ll see how that goes… I also eat pretty healthy.[Q] Tell us a bit about the highlights of the weekend leading up to the race.
[A] Highlights for the weekend was just being at the Otter and feeling like the season had started and definitely seeing the team there…I had a ton of fun with everyone. Also putting together a run I was happy with wasn’t too bad to go along with the weekend.[Q] Describe your race run for us and how you felt at the bottom of the hill.
[A] Race run went good, couldn’t have asked for much more. Gave it everything I had and did pretty well.[Q] If you could change one thing about how the weekend went what would it be?
[A] Only thing was on the last step down I went wide on the landing and almost into the tape and lost some time there. Only being 1 second off of the top 5, I wish I would’ve got that section better and I could’ve been in the Top 5.[Q] After such a standout result how does this effect you going into the rest of the season?
[A] Ya that result gave me some good confidence for the rest of the season and I’m going to keep training hard, riding a lot, having fun, and chasing my goals.
